Q: What are the Requirements to get a license in New York State?
A: A driver must have passed a written permit test, completed 50+ hours of instruction/practice, taken the 5 hour pre-licensing class and successfully passed the road test.
Q: When does Safety First Driving School offer the 5 hour pre-licensing class?
A: The class is held via Zoom every Monday at 5 pm. Register in advance to receive a text with the access code and attendance requirements before the class starts. Please be aware that, effective September 9, 2024, full payment must be received before the class begins.
Q: How much is the 5 hour pre-licensing class if I take it through Safety First Driving School?
A: The cost to attend the class is $60. The certificate will be available for pickup as early as the following day, or mailed to you within 2 business days of the completion of the class, if requested.
**Please note that the 5 hour pre-licensing class certificate is valid for only one year.**
Q: I took the 5 hour pre-licensing class with Safety First Driving School, but I lost the certificate you sent me. Can you send me a duplicate?
A: Yes, we can do that. The fee for this service is $20.
Q: I want to take lessons with Safety First Driving School. What is required before I start?
A: You are required to have a learner’s permit to take a driving lesson. Please visit https://dmv.ny.gov/permits for more information on obtaining a learner’s permit in New York. There are restrictions to driving with a permit as well. Please visit: https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/learner-permit-and-driver-license-restrictions for more information.
Q: I only bought a few lessons so far. I’d like to upgrade to a package. Can I do that?
A: Yes, Safety First Driving School would be happy to upgrade your package and save you money.
Q: Can I have all of my lessons with a specific instructor at Safety First Driving School?
A: Sure! If the schedules align, we will be happy to accommodate your request.
Q: Can my Safety First Driving School instructor pick me up from school? Or work? Or drop me off at a different location than I was picked up at?
A: Yes, we won’t write your dismissal note, but we can be at your school or work to pick you up. Or any location in Rockland. We can also drop you off at another location.
Q: I think I’m a good driver already, but I really need to work on parking/night time driving/highway driving. Can I schedule a lesson where we can focus on that?
A: Sure! Please let us know when scheduling and we can do that.
Q: Where can I take my road test?
A: In Rockland County, you can take your road test in Stony Point or in Orangeburg.
Q: Can Safety First Driving School schedule my road test?
A: Yes, Safety First Driving School can schedule your road test in Orangeburg, NY or Stony Point, NY for a fee. You must have completed the 5 hour pre-licensing class prior to booking this appointment. Please see the rate schedule for this service.
Q: Can Safety First Driving School take me to my road test in the school car?
A: Yes we can! In fact, since you have taken lessons in this car, you should feel comfortable. Please see the rate schedule for this service.
Q: What forms of payment do you accept?
A: Safety First Driving School accepts cash, checks, Zelle, Venmo and all major credit cards. Please note there is a 4% processing fee when using a credit card.
Steps to Obtain a License:
1. Study and pass the written permit exam.
2. Take the 5 hour pre-licensing class.
3. You must have 6 months and 50 hours of practice, only if you are under 18.
